Welcome to Take Part, the national learning framework for active learning for active citizenship. The Take Part framework provides a manual for learning providers. It enables them to develop programmes of citizenship learning to help adults gain the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to become empowered as members of their communities.

Citizenship learning is part of the school curriculum, encouraging children to grow up thinking of themselves as ‘active citizens: willing, able and equipped to have an influence in public life’ (Department for Education and Skills, 1988).

In 2001, citizenship learning for 16 to 19 year olds became a government priority, with the five-year Post-16 Citizenship Development Programme, and in September 2006, with the Post-16 Citizenship Support Programme run by the Learning and Skills Network.

Take Part now completes the set, providing a framework and an approach for adult learning for active citizenship. Take Part has been developed following a two year pilot, Active Learning for Active Citizenship, funded by the Home Office. The regional hub organisations who took part in the pilot have formed the Take Part network and created the Take Part framework to share their good practice and guidance for other learning providers.
